Congratulations to Barry Stark who defeated Guy Dennis 4-3 on Thursday evening to win the Holgates Masters 2013.

Barry Stark & Guy Dennis with the Pete Holgate Memorial Trophy

It was a quality match and arguably the best NBSA final since the infamous Notts Amateur final of 2012.

Frame 1: Stark 83-10 Dennis
Dennis was slow getting out of the blocks in the first frame and Stark capitalised by opening up a 19 point lead before compiling a lovely frame winning 54 break to lead 1-0.

Frame 2: Stark 53-67 Dennis
Dennis responded well making an early 37 break.  Stark came back strongly and went into a small lead but Dennis looked like he would pinch it until missing frame ball pink when on a run of 17.  Fortunately for him, Stark let him off by playing a poor safety shot and Dennis made no mistake this time, potting pink to the middle to level the match at 1-1.

Frame 3: Stark 64-48 Dennis
Stark started the frame strongly but Dennis had a run of 24 to close the gap to 7 points.  Stark got a kick when on a break of 13, leaving himself snookered on the yellow.  Dennis then looked like he would clear the table until he missed the pink, leaving a simple pot for Stark to pinch the frame.

Frame 4: Stark 13-72 Dennis
This frame was a little scrappy but Dennis scored more heavily and a final 27 break was enough to secure the frame for Dennis and level the match at 2-2.

Frame 5: Stark 9-58 Dennis
The all important fifth frame was very tactical but Dennis scored consistently whilst at the same time denying Stark any real chances.  He restricted Stark to just 9 points and it was looking good for Dennis as he went 3-2 ahead, needing just one more frame for the title.

Frame 6: Stark 62-59 Dennis
It was looking ominous for Stark who had only scored 22 points in the last two frames.  It got worse too, Dennis making a terrific 49 break to lead by 48 points with only 59 left on the table.  Stark really had to dig deep now if he was going to stay in the match.  He got in with a 15 break first, before following that up with a run of 13.  He now trailed by 20 points with just the colours remaining.  Dennis potted the yellow but he was forced to attempt a tricky green along the cushion which he just did not fancy.  Sure enough he rattled it in the jaws and Stark cleared the colours superbly under pressure to steal the frame and set up a tense decider.

Frame 7: Stark 66-57 Dennis
Dennis was in first, making a 17 break which should have been more but he missed a black off the spot.  He was soon back in though, a run of 30 this time to give him a 51 point lead.  Dennis was now a clear favourite but as we all know, Stark has tremendous battling qualities and only a fool would write him off in these big finals.  Breaks of 18 and 30 followed, reducing Dennis' lead to just 3 points going into the colours.  Dennis potted the yellow and laid a good snooker on the green.  Stark failed to hit the green and Dennis was now 9 points clear and faced with a great chance to clear the table.  But he missed the green, leaving it over the corner pocket.  In it went but Stark snookered himself on the brown!  He managed to hit it but he left a chance for Dennis.  Dennis then missed the brown and Stark potted brown, blue and pink to take the frame and match.  Stark could easily have capitulated in those last two frames but he dug deep and plucked a victory from the jaws of defeat.  A terrific performance from both players.

Wayne Martin picks up the high break trophy thanks to his wonderful break of 131.

Both finalists will be presented with their trophies at the NBSA Golf Day and Presentation Dinner which will be held at Oakmere Park Golf Club on Tuesday 30th July 2013.  CLICK HERE for details.
