Premier Division Warms Up

Singles League

The Premier Division title race has been thrown wide open again after two impressive results.  Firstly, Jason Turner is back in contention after a superb 4-0 win against Wayne Martin.  The former Sherwood player who now plays for Oakleigh Lodge capped a great performance with a classy 51 break to leave Martin licking his wounds.  Martin responded in a positive manner by inflicting a first defeat this term for Gary Spencer. Martin knocked in a couple of thirty something breaks in the 3-1 win to move back to the top of the table.  Mike Langdon moved 3 points clear at the top of Division 1 after a hard fought victory away from home against James Notman.  The win means that should he beat Neil Elliott this week he will be crowned champion although a loss to his title rival who has a game in hand would take the title out of Langdon?s own hands.  Mohammed Zubair is enjoying a good end to the season following up his first four nil victory with a notable 3-1 win against Malc Belshaw whilst Toby Irons beat Adam Goodall 3-1 to move clear of his opponent at the bottom end of the table.  A superb run of results has catapulted Spider Wilkinson to the brink of Division 2 glory.  His latest win, yet another clean sweep came against Sean Croft and with Eric Towle causing an upset by beating top of the table Shaun Parkinson 3-1 it now means should Spider win his remaining 2 matches he will win the league.

Ahmed & Winter to meet in Final

Knockout Cup Competitions

The 2009 Singles Championship will be contested between Arnold?s talented Chris Winter and last season?s runner-up Zeb Ahmed from Peoples Hall.  Winter booked his place in the final in a pulsating semi-final clash against Beeston?s Neil Jones.  When the Beeston man made a quality 59 break to take the first frame, Winter must have feared the worst.  However, Winter struck back to take the next two frames before Jones strung together a run of 40 to ensure the contest would go the distance.  In snooker there?s winning and then there?s winning in style and Winter did just that knocking in a superb 51 break to finally break Jones and bag that much coveted final spot.  He will meet Zeb Ahmed in the final who overcame Peoples Hall team-mate John Marshall in a match that also went the distance.  Ahmed has now impressively reached the final for the second consecutive year and will be hoping to go one better and lift the title this time round.  The final will be played at a neutral venue and promises to be an intriguing encounter between two talented players with very differing styles.  In the Singles Handicap Championship, Pegasus?s Jamie Mathers made a fantastic 71 break to reach the semi-final stage in his 2-1 away win against Sherwood?s Lee Crombie.  We also have our first finalists in this years Handicap Pairs Championship.  Stadium?s Steve Butler and Matt Ellis causing an upset in the process by beating Arnold?s Gary Spencer and James Notman in a fully deserved 2-0 victory.  They will meet either Matt Savage & Adam Goodall from Lenton or BCI?s pairing of Kwok Yip & Jonathan Mason in the final.
