with reference to player handicaps, why should it be that  players who once played on the tour some 5-8 years ago still have to give a start in the singles and doubles there are players in our leagues who play more times than others who are capable of making the big breaks who dont get penalised its like somebody like stephen hendry giving somebody like john higgins 21 start because stephen used to be number 1 in the world a couple of seasons ago they wouldnt do it. i dont think its fair if i played in a tournament it would be for the experience of playng somebody better than you are and learning from it even if it is just for fun. i think all the starts in singles and doubles should be scratched and cup competitions.

I totally agree with you on this one Gary.  Can't wait for the new season hopefully we can push you a lttle harder this season

There are a few different possibilities here:

1. A new singles championship could be created, separate from the handicap tournament.  This would give players a choice of which to enter (they could still enter both).  I would imagine that the best players would enter the singles and the less able players would enter the handicap.  The Singles would probably be a bit more prestigious as the winner would know they have competed on equal terms with everyone and come out on top.

2. Revive the Notts Amateur Championship (NAC) and retain the NHSL Singles Handicap as is.  This would be the same as 1. above except that the NAC would be open to all amateur players throughout Notts.

3. Scrap the Handicaps and continue with just one singles tournament in the NHSL.  Thoughts on this in previous years were that it would put the less able players off entering and thus reduce the amount raised for charity in entry fees (although this was only ?28 last season!).

What do you think?  The Committee are open to ideas and any changes will be decided by democratic vote at the AGM.

As you are aware, we opted for option 1. above.

Handicaps for the 2007/08 season were set by the handicap committee comprising Wayne Bilbie, Alan Cunningham & Dennis Peet.

Players were placed into one of 5 groups - Scratch(0), 7, 14, 21 and 28.

The start a player will receive/give is calculated by deducting a player's handicap from his opponent's handicap.

In the table below, players with a "-" in the handicap column have not entered this year and have therefore not been given a handicap.

Doubles: Handicap for a pair will be that of the player with the lower handicap. (eg. one is 7, other is 21, hcp = 7)
